UPCOMING
APPEARANCESPeriodically, we post Dr. Westgard's schedule of public lectures and workshops. Below follows some of the public schedule for the 2004. If you are interested in having Dr. Westgard speak at your conference, workshop, or organization, check out our training solutions here.
Topic: Quality vs. Performance: What is required in standards, regulations, and guidelines?
Event: 2004 Quality in Medical Laboratories Conference.
Location: Antwerp, Belgium.
The successful series of "Quality in the Spotlight" conferences held in Antwerp and dealing with the quality in medical laboratories focuses this time on targets and target values in clinical chemistry - given the quality that is required by the medical profession and what can realistically be provided by industry. Interactive workshops will help to guarantee the practical usefulness of the conference.
In the special cases of POCT (point-of-care-testing) and NPT (near-patient-testing), the definition of the desired quality is even more important because of the multiple opportunities for error. Consequently, it becomes even more important to estimate and state the target values when applying the proper linkage. Is there a role for central laboratories in the quality management of POCT and NPT?
Prominent international speakers will address the conference, shedding light on the future of laboratory medicine and facilitating the numerous interactive sessions. Questions to be discussed include: What actual quality can be obtained by using certified reference materials? Will indicators still be used to monitor and display the performance of medical laboratories? Which targets and target values in clinical chemistry should be addressed and/or used?

Topic: "Learn about Six Sigma: the latest trend within quality assurance in medical laboratories"
Event: Sponsored by Radiomter
Location: Radiometer Medical A/S, Åkandevej 21, 2700 Brønshøj, Denmark
Description:
Six Sigma is the latest trend within quality assurance. Originally it was used for process evaluation and optimization within the car industry, but Six Sigma is now also used in medical laboratories as an easy way to quantify the quality of analyses.
In cooperation with Radiometer, DSKB (Dansk Selskab for Klinisk Biokemi) has invited Professor James O. Westgard, PhD, who is the inventor of the “Westgard rules”, for a one-day workshop in Denmark. During the workshop Professor Westgard will describe how to use Six Sigma to gain insight into the quality control level necessary in order to optimize a laboratory analysis.
The workshop is for everybody who works with or has an interest in quality assurance in the medical laboratory, i.e. biochemists, doctors or med techs.
Registration: No later than March 1, 2004.
Telephone: +45 38 27 38 27
How to register:
Registration can be done on ”Dansk Selskab for Klinisk Biokemi”s homepage (www.dskb.dk), choose ”Uddannelse” (Education) - ”Øvrige kurser” (Other courses). Confirmation will be sent by e-mail when DSKB has received your registration. The number of attendees is limited, so please be quick with your registration if you wish to participate.
