Introduction to West China Hospital Sichuan University Department of Laboratory Medicine:

The Department of Laboratory Medicine of West China Hospital, Sichuan University was established in December 2002. After several adjustments of the organization structure, presently the department consists of 5 subdivisions and 2 branch groups (clinical chemistry, body fluid and hematology, clinical microbiology, clinical immunology, molecular diagnostics, and Shangjin branch, Yongning branch).

The department now employs 196 people, including about 100 professors, associate professors and lecturers. Four faculty have postdoc experience including two oversea postdocs. There are 11 master’s tutors, 3 of which are also qualified as doctoral tutors. Nearly 50 faculty and staff have Phd or master degrees, including 22 Phd.

The department is responsible for all the laboratory tests of west China Hospital. As the largest laboratory medical center in China, we are capable to run over 500 tests and process over 20,000 specimens per day using the most advanced techniques.
The department has established total quality management system with highly experienced medical team and prioritized workflow. We adopt multi - type automatic analyzers instead of single - machine analysis, which achieves the purpose of improving inspection quality while ensuring the rapid detection of samples. Through the connection of LIS system and detection instrument, the data transmission mode and the quality management are improved. The LIS integrated with HIS assure the barcode management of specimen information and the paperless service of inspection application and report. Moreover, automated pretreatment system and analysis of assembly line ensure pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical quality, which make the laboratory medicine of west china hospital into the age of total quality management system.

The department has been accredited by College of American Pathologists (CAP) since 2006, and becomes the first full CAP accredited laboratory medical center in China. During the United States CAP medical laboratory accreditation review in every 2 year, the department achieved excellent outcomes. The overlap rate and the eligibility rate are 90% and above 97%, respectively. The department also participates the PT programs of the National Center of Clinical Laboratory, the overlap rate and the eligibility rate are100% and above 97%, respectively.

The department was awarded the Key Specialty of Clinical Laboratory by the Ministry of Health in 2010. And was ranked the third place nationwide in Ranking of Medical Specialties first hold by Fudan University in November 2015.

In recent years, the department has been awarded one "11th five-year plan" national science and technology support program, one "twelfth five-year" national science and technology support program, one national key research and development project of ministry of science and technology, one national key specialty projects, 11 health industry standard projects revised of ministry of health, 40 projects from National Natural Science Foundation of China, 38 provincial level research grants. Over 230 SCI research papers have been published. We have obtained 6 China National Invention Patents. Meanwhile, we also participate in CMB projects, new drug trials of SDA, the research projects of MOH, Ministry of science and Technology, etc.
Over 30 of our staff have worked as editors or authors of medical textbooks, such as Clinical Immunology, Clinical Laboratory Management, Laboratory Diagnostics for 8 year medical students, Clinical Hematology, Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Microbiology Molecular Diagnostics, Transfusion Medicine, etc., published by People’s Medical Publishing House, and Higher Education Publishing House.

The faculty and staff of the department also serve as professors and teachers of the department of medical technology of West China Medical School of Sichuan University. The department is qualified to offer bachelor, master, and Phd degree programs in laboratory medicine. Since 2004, we initiated 5-year and 2-year training programs for medical technologists and technicians. The training programs, which represent a new model for training different levels of experts in medical laboratory technology, are different from the postgraduate education program. In order to facilitate the full development of these professionals, we wrote a textbook The Selection and Application of Laboratory Tests, and the second edition was published in December 2013, which is well liked by technologists, student, and junior medical doctors.

Through our continuing communication and cooperation with clinical departments, we will further explore new laboratory diagnostic technologies. By improving the multidisciplinary integration, we will promote co-developments with other disciplines in related fields, implement new research projects and study on new test combinations. We will pursue our philosophy of "advanced technology, accurate results, and excellent service", to continue the quality improvement, patient care and service, and make a contribution to various social communities.
